Note: the current build does not create a .jre bundle, but this page describes the intention for what .jdk and .jre bundles should do
.jdk bundle
- For developers only
- Installed in /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines
- Used by the /usr/bin/j* tools
- May only be embedded in Java IDEs, not appropriate for normal .apps
.jre bundle
- For embedding in Java-based .apps and plugins
- Should not be "installed" on the system
- Can be further stripped down if embedding app doesn't need
- unused classes in rt.jar
- unused HotSpots (client vs. server)
- unused architectures (lipo out i386 or x86_64)
- unused native libraries
