Quarterly Report for Q4 2014
The Adoption Group has a mailing list, a web site, a wiki and 8 Group Members, of which 7 have been active on the mailing list or contributed to the wiki in this quarter. In addition, 14 Participants have contributed to this Group's discussions in this quarter.
The Adoption Group has not voted on new Members, or sponsored new Projects. It published a quarterly report in this quarter for Q3 2014, which is available on its wiki.
Mailing list traffic
In total, 21 Participants have been active on the Group's mailing list in this quarter, posting 32 messages in October, 48 messages in November and 56 messages in December 2014, resulting in 136 messages in total.
Notable mailing list threads
In October, the Group discussed the Hackergarten at the JavaOne conference, the LJC OpenJDK hackday in London, and the posting of a new Project Jigsaw JEP - JEP 220.
In November, the Group discussed the removal of the MaxPermSize HotSpot command line flag in JDK 9, a proposal for copying data from/to Reader/Writer InputStream/OutputStream, access to OpenJDK code review infrastructure, building JDK 9 on Windows, build platforms for JDK 8 and JDK 9, the preparation of the Group's Draft Quarterly Report for Q3 2014, and the submission of a Q&A session for the FOSDEM Java dev room.
Finally, in December, the Group continued to discuss the preparation of the Group's Draft Quarterly Report for Q3 2014, and the submission of a Q&A session for the FOSDEM Java dev room, in addition to discussing the availability of modular JDK 9 images with JDK 9 Early Access build b41, further improvements to Beterrev, raising developer awareness of JDK 9, using Checkstyle on OpenJDK, and using IntelliJ IDEA for OpenJDK development.
QA Outreach
As part of a QA outreach effort by this Group's Members, 42 FOSS Projects and their developers listed on the corresponding Wiki page have been regularly contacted to announce the availability of Early Access (EA) builds based on various OpenJDK Projects, and encouraged to report back any issues they found during their testing. With about two thirds of the contacted Projects regularly testing such EA builds, a number of issues could be found and fixed in time prior to a release.
In this quarter, developers from participating projects filed 4 new issues in the JDK Bug System, 3 of which could be resolved. Three of the issues filed turned out to be P2 issues, like issue JDK-8066746 found by the Groovy development team, and issue JDK-8065373 found by the Apache jMeter development team.
Events
Adoption Group Members led, organized and participated in a number of public events promoting community involvement in the development, adoption and evangelism of OpenJDK projects during this quarter.
JUGs
The LJC held successful OpenJDK Hackdays in London in October, and November.
Conferences
The LJC held an Open Conference in December, where Adoption Group members spoke on getting involved with OpenJDK. In addition, Adoption Group Members spoke at the Devoxx conference in Belgium and took part in an OpenJDK hands on lab at the Java2Days conference in Sofia in this quarter.
